Shiatsu is often described as “finger pressure” and “stimulating the movement of energy”. And it is both these things. It has a strong pedigree, too – rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, with all its beauty and poetry. Now, in the 21st century, quantum theory is being used to explain what happens at a sub-atomic level in the interaction between practitioner and receiver… But what does that really mean for the person receiving a Shiatsu session?

Especially when we are troubled by an ache or pain we can “reject” that part of our body. Shiatsu is a holistic treatment that uses touch to help the receiver fully connect with and through all parts of the body and regain a sense of wholeness.

Through physical touch there’s of course a relaxation of the muscles – and this in itself can be very liberating. But Shiatsu goes to a deeper place. It can help us realize that we are more than just our physical bodies. It gives space for the mind to stop chattering – giving a feeling of profound relaxation that allows us to connect to what some people refer to as “spirit”. It is here that shiatsu can help the receiver find their own way to health and wellness.

Although Shiatsu cannot claim to cure physical symptoms, many people find that back pain, headaches, PMT, muscular-skeletal disorders, depression and insomnia are alleviated by regular treatments. So, whilst not replacing traditional medical support as a route to health, shiatsu can be safely used to complement it.
